Hmm, I wonder how long till the STUPID, FREAKIN ESRB rating crap picks wind up on BYOND. Imagine every game being rated on BYOND and you had to show some ID to play M games. That would suck so bad.

I actually don't think most of the games here would get the Mature rating or higher. Think about it, how realistic/offensive can a tile-based or text-based game be?

Yeah buy ever since they started doing that that was the end of my video game fun. I could play anything Turok, Mortal Kombat but now I can't even play most Teen shooting games.

think about real life, if ESRB were to rate it, would kids be able to even go out?

What I think we need is a rating system for players... if there was such a thing, I wouldn't let anyone into my games unless THEY were rated M for Mature. There's so many things I would love to put into Hedgerow Hall that I really can't, since most of the people playing the game are not intellectually mature enough to use only when it's appropriate.
For instance, if I add the ability to kill other characters, I would expect it to only be used about 2-3 times a year... and I don't mean by each player. However, the majority of players would simply kill anyone who annoyed them, or who moved, or had something they wanted. That's an example of somebody who can't "handle" violence... instead of using it as a tool, they use it as a toy. If I knew that all the people playing the game were mature (mentally and emotionally) adults, I wouldn't hesitate to add in the ability to take another's life, and I would also gladly talk with Spuzzum or whoever it is who's advocating an "offspring" system. If I actually had a mature audience, I could count on features like this to add something to the game... since I don't, they would only take things away. |

Keywords: with an adult. If you go down to the video store or whatever with an adult who gives you consent to rent or buy that game, they have no right to deny you the rental or purchase thereof. But I don't disagree with denying violent, offensive, or otherwise nasty media to unaccompanied minors. If your parents don't mind you playing that game, even if it's violent or whatever, that's their prerogative, but they should at least be informed that their kid is indeed playing it. |

The memory I have of HRH: walking out of the monastery, and then ending up being knocked unconscious and looted by a rabbit. I had no Idea what was going on, he just popped into my burrow, and knocked me out, tried to loot me, and then left, realizing I had nothing, I complained about it, and no one did anything.
HRH was ruined for me after that incident |

I don't know what anybody could've done... hunt down the rabbit, who may or may not have actually been a rabbit? I have made character creation into considerably more involved process, which should cut down on a little bit of the rampant immaturity, ignorance, impatience, etc., which results in "characters" who have no motivation, no description, no extra characterizations, and do nothing but beat other characters into the ground and take their stuff.

ESRB is a completely voluntary act. If you want to submit your BYOND game to the ESRB, they'd do one of two things: 1, complain at you for wasting their time, or 2, thank you and rate your game. They wouldn't impose anything even remotely close to forcing ratings on BYOND games in general. As it stands, most retail game stores don't accept games unless they've been rated by the ESRB, but what kind of BYOND game would ever appear in a retail store anyway?
Remember that there are no laws against not rating your game.
I don't see anything wrong with having to show ID to rent or play Mature-rated games, unless accompanied by a parent. While the Mature rating system does slow things down somewhat, it also helps parents to actually try to raise their kids right (since they sure as heck wouldn't otherwise).
