How the heck am I even supposed to search resources anymore? All there is, is a stupid "search" button, and its not giving me the results it used to.
EDIT: Forget it, I had a big argument with Tiberath and feel better now. Sorry.

Perhaps you could give some examples of searches and the results you used to get that are no longer listed?
|
There used to be some old stuff laying around I wanted to access cause I didn't back it up, now instead of being able to just type it in and select resources, I can't find it at all. Why does BYOND keep changing stuff, it isn't helpful it is frustrating!
|
They can't improve it unless you give some constructive feedback. If you were faced with "The search is lame, it can't find some old stuff I wanted", how exactly would you modify the code to fix that situation? Personally, I couldn't, because there is plain not enough information to go on. When it comes to site searching in particular, Tom appears to be damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't. What were you looking for, and what search terms did you use?
|
He said resources. Tom removed their specific search, but may add it back. ([link])
I think it's a problem of too many results being listed. We have forum, blog, and game searches on the site. However, there is no search dedicated to demos and/or libraries. Instead, Google brings up all of the above. You have to manually search through a list collected by a guild/user and hope something worthwhile is listed. |
Ironically this was probably put in because of exactly the same complaint we're seeing here. I'm sure other developers here have been in a similar situation before, the proverbial game of hotter - colder with feature tweaking:
Customer : I don't like X, it doesn't work well. Developer: Okay ... we'll look into changing it. What is wrong? Customer : I don't like it. Developer: Okay ... we'll look into changing it. *change released* Customer : I don't like X, it doesn't work well. Developer: Okay ... we'll look into changing it. What is wrong? Customer : I like the old way. Developer: Okay ... we'll look into changing it. *change released* *see top* You never actually reach the specifics of how they use and would like to use the feature, or how/what they expect it to output. |

Vs the old system, which IMO returned a lot of garbage due to the lack of a decent filter on demos & libraries. For the time being you can access that search here: http://www.byond.com/members/?command=search&type=resources In the first prototype, LJR had this as a custom content input box under DreamMakers, but I shot it down because I felt it to be confusing (with two other search bars already on that page). However, we could add that back. My general rule is to try to optimize the most visible components (in our case, the site-search) rather than supplement them with special-cases (like this resource search). |
